One of the fastest and most effective ways to build a bench is in a knock-down model, with a well-designed hardware system for the legs. Virtually all European benches use a bolt system to fasten leg sets to stretchers. These bench bolts are ideal for this purpose. In general, you can build your bench top as an individual element and fit it onto two leg sets, which are joined with bolted stretchers. The bolt system overcomes the problems of humidity changes common in North America, because you can snug the bolts if anything loosens. The solid-brass nuts on our bench bolts slide into a pre-drilled hole in the stretcher, and distribute pressure to prevent break-out. A bench can be made very rigid by using a wide stretcher. No complex joinery is required since the stretcher is bolted in position. The bolts are 6" long and 1/2" in diameter. The nuts are 25mm x 25mm and will fit perfectly into a 1" hole.
